Situated along the banks of the White River in southern Indiana, the town of Spencer is located approximately fifteen miles northwest of Bloomington and fifty-five miles southwest of Indianapolis. Spencer is the county seat of Owen County and home to more than 2,200 residents, who enjoy the excellent schools, outstanding city services, and friendly hometown atmosphere for which the city is known.

Spencer’s fabulous mild climate makes it possible to enjoy the city’s amazing opportunities for outdoor sports and recreation year-round. From fishing on the White River, to camping at Hickory Hills Campground, to hiking, biking, and horseback riding at McCormick’s Creek State Park, there is no end to the fun and adventure Spencer has to offer. Spencer is located near Green’s Bluff Nature Preserve, a 563-acre nature conservancy that features hiking trails with interpretive signs throughout describing the lush landscape, foliage, and animals that live there. Also nearby is Owen-Putnam State Forest, a beautiful hardwood forest featuring fishing, hunting, hiking, biking, and horseback riding, and McCormick’s Creek State Park featuring picnic facilities, playgrounds, an Olympic sized swimming pool, amphitheater, and more than ten miles of trails suitable for hiking and biking.

Downtown Spencer is home to the Tivoli Theatre, a historic landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places that features first-run movies and live theater productions. The Owen Valley Winery is located just three miles south of town. The winery is part of the Indiana Uplands Wine Trail and hosts the annual Owen County Art Guild Art Show and Red Wine Pirate Ball, both taking place in December.

Spencer is home to a number of festivals and special events each year, including the Hyperion Music and Arts Festival, a two-day camping festival held each August at Stable Studios that features a host of bands, visual artists, and performances that include a circus and puppet show. The city also hosts the Rock & Run 5K, held each June at Stable Studios, and the Apple Butter Festival, held each September in the Courthouse Square.
